Gate valves are used to shut off the flow of liquids, not to regulate flow. When fully open, a typical gate valve has no obstructions in the flow path, resulting in very low resistance to flow. As the gate is moved, the dimensions of the open flow path typically change in a non-linear fashion. This means that flow does not vary uniformly with stem travel. Depending on the construction, a partially open gate will vibrate due to fluid flow. Gate valves are primarily used in larger pipe diameters (pipes from 2 to xxx) as they are simpler in construction than other types of large size valves. At high pressure, friction can become a problem. Operating the valve becomes more difficult as the gate is pushed against its guide by the pressure of the medium. Large gate valves are sometimes equipped with a bypass controlled by a smaller valve to allow the pressure to be reduced before operating the gate valve itself. Gate valves without additional seals on the gate or seat are used in applications where slight leakage from the valve is not an issue, such as heating circuits or sewer lines.
